Alfonso Ribeiro reportedly filed a lawsuit this week against Fortnite creators and NBA 2K for stealing his Carlton Dance. Alfonso made the Carlton Dance famous on Will Smith’s iconic sitcom, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. He has since reportedly filed copyright documents for the dance and is seeking financial compensation from Fortnite creators and NBA 2K.

However, today TMZ released a video of Alfonso admitting that he himself actually stole what is now the Carlton Dance from someone else. The video which was recorded in 2012 shows Alfonso Ribeiro admitting that he stole the dance move from Courtney Cox and Eddie Murphy.

About the video, his lawyer, David Hecht says “On numerous occasions, Mr. Ribeiro has commented on his inspiration for the dance. In the clip, Mr. Ribeiro used the word “stole” in jest. He did not use the word ‘stole’ in the legal sense. In his words, it was Ribeiro’s (a professional dancer’s) interpretation of what a white person looks like when they dance. That describes a copyrightable choreographic work.”

Stay tuned for more as this story develops.
