Yesterday, June 18th was like no other day in hip hop when it comes to tragedy, violence and death. The murders of two rappers happened so closely to each other that it left many fans, industry heads and artist stunned at least momentarily. Shortly after the news of XXXTentacion’s death after being gunned down under suspicious circumstances, the news broke that Philly artist Jimmy Wopo was also gunned down and was dead. That’s two artists dead, killed violently hours apart.
According to officials, Jimmy Wopo was gunned down in a drive-by shooting in the Hill District of Pennsylvania city as he sat inside his car with another man around 4:22pm Eastern Time. Both men were rushed to the hospital shortly after and Jimmy Wopo was subsequently pronounced dead, his friend was listed in stable condition. Jimmy Wopo had just signed to a major record deal and his future was looking bright. He had just also been signed to management by Grammy nominated producer Sledgren. Upon hearing the news, Sledgren took to social media and posted an emotional caption, “We just signed him I can’t stop crying.”
Although Jimmy Wopo and XXXTencion were both shot in drive by shooting a few hours apart there is no reason thus far to think the shootings are connected. Thus far, there is no known motive for Jimmy Wopo’s shooting and witnesses are being questioned by officials. We will keep you posted as these stories develop.
