Emmy winning writer Lena Waithe and director Melina Matsoukas premiered the much anticipated “Queen and Slim” romantic thriller in Atlanta at the Spotify x Motown Event at the Woodruff Arts Center in Atlanta, Georgia.
“Queen and Slim” is a fast paced drama starring Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out) and Jodie Turner-Smith, in her first starring feature-film role.
This is a ground breaking and must see film that will spark many conversations on race relations and the interactions with law enforcement. “The spirit of Sandra Bland helped to drive the motivation of the movie,” stated the director Melina Matsoukas.
Music also helped to infuse the energy of the film from beginning to end. Not since the movies of the 90’s like “Set it Off” and “Love and Basketball” have an urban film fluently used music to provide the back drop to the film. The soundtrack has banging tracks from beginning to end from artists like Megan Thee Stallion, Syd, Burna Boy and Lil Baby.
Moviegoers at the Spotify x Motown Atlanta premiere were treated to performances from Tiana Major 9 singing the effectuous ballad “When we Collide” from the soundtrack and a surprise appearance from Lauryn Hill singing her song “Guarding the Gate”. Ms Hill closed the night out in grand fashion singing a medley of all of her hits reminding everyone about the great entertainer she is.
