Roland Martin Launches #HBCUGivingDay Campaign To Raise Money for HBCUs

Award-winning TV Host, Journalist, Author and Advocate Roland Martin announced during his recent appearance on “The Wendy Williams Show” his new initiative to raise money for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).  His campaign is called #HBCUGivingDay and the platform is being launched with its partnering hashtag to encourage donations to the 100-plus HBCUs.

Martin is using the campaign hashtag #HBCUGivingDay as a call to action on social media.  To further his mission, Martin will highlight one Historically Black College and University daily by wearing a school lapel pin of an HBCU that he has been a guest speaker at or delivered a commencement speech for.  Among the HBCUs he has highlighted since launching #HBCUGivingDay include Grambling State University, Shaw University, Virginia State University, Harris-Stowe State University, and Spelman College.

#HBCUGivingDay has already inspired huge support from both corporate companies and the general public. It has been reported that Coca Cola has donated $260,000 to Grambling State University; and HBCU alumni and those who recognize the importance of the higher education institutes have been making significant donations as well.

“The nation’s historically Black colleges and universities have been vital to the development and growth of the African American community,” says Roland Martin. “Even though I didn’t attend one, I’ve spoken at more than three dozen HBCUs, and their role for the future of Black America is vital. But in age of education cutbacks, we must encourage graduates and non-grads to support their mission. I believe that every dollar counts. And I want to use all of my platforms to help drive dollars to our HBCUs.”
