Scammers Demanding Their Extortion Payments in Bitcoin

It appears that scammers have turned their attention from credit card scams to Bitcoin scams. As the cryptocurrency wave continues to grow and more people own Bitcoin, Ripple and others, in addition to the fact that the currency is untraceable, scammers are seeing the advantages of escaping scot-free. So, the crimes that were at one time considered personal, are now strictly business for scammers who carefully seek out their target by first finding out if the target has a vulnerability ie sextape, cheating and/ or any other scandals.

According to an article from CNBC and articles from other media outlets, including reported complaints, there is a growing rash of scams being ran on people and the highly demanded form of ransom payment required by the scammers is Bitcoin.

“I know you cheated on your wife.”

Those chilling words were in a letter sent to Dave Eargle’s home. The then-graduate student found the note in his mailbox and could not believe what he was reading.

“It is just your bad luck that I stumbled across your misadventures while working a job,” the letter continued.

“Even if you decide to come clean with your wife about your cheating, doing so won’t protect her from the humiliation she will feel when her friends and family find out the sordid details from me.”

And then finally, a demand: “If you want me to destroy the evidence and leave you alone forever then send $2,000 in BITCOIN.”
