Lava La Rue announces Stitches mixtape + shares new single
Today, West London rapper and singer Lava La Rue announces her forthcoming Stitches mixtape and shares a new single, “Mochino in 83”. Lava La Rue recently stirred attention with her experimental sound on her debut solo EP LETRA and as the founding member of the collective Nine8. The new song “Mochino in 83” features Virgil Hawkins and follows previous single “Burn,” which was produced by fellow members of her collective L!BAAN and Nige. The new track finds Lava effortlessly gliding between swift rap diary-entry lyrics and soulful vocals, underscoring the unique sound she has refined growing up amongst a community of friends in London.
Lava La Rue shares about the weight of the song, “When Virgil (Hawkins) said ‘I work hard like Moschino in 83’ in his verse I really felt that, just before he wrote those lyrics we had a deep conversation about not feeling the need to linger at parties anymore / go to functions just to say you went nor be around people who aren’t giving back emotionally / positively and the lyrics to this song kinda came from that transition of seeing who true friends / partners are still there when it’s time to grind and not just having fun…when you’re goal in life suddenly becomes clear it’s like tunnel vision and the right ones see that tunnel with you.”
As the founding member of the creative group NiNE8, 20-year old Lava is aiming to redefine UK rap on her own terms. On her fierce debut EP LETRA, she combined elements of ’90s R&B and hip-hop seamlessly, showcasing musical dexterity and a powerful poeticism in her lyrics that demands to be heard. Lava’s sound has grabbed the attention of i-D, Dazed, Noisey and was recognized by hotly-tipped session host COLORS , where she performed her standout track “Widdit.”
Though music remains a steadfast part of her identity, her range of creativity spans far beyond into art and fashion. She has curated incredible projects across both worlds, perhaps most notably a show at Men’s Fashion Week , and a TATE Modern takeover. Now ready to focus on her music once again, Lava is setting the pace and has sculpted her sound to embody the full extent of her creativity across mediums.
Lava will be embarking on a run of festival appearances across Europe this Summer, including All Points East Festival, Parklife, Glastonbury and more. The Summer festival run follows her most recent headlining show at London’s Corsica Studios earlier this month and her performances with Clairo on her European tour last year.
