Exclusive Interview: FUBU’s Co-Founder Carl Brown Reflects on the Iconic Fashion Line’s 25th Anniversary & Upcoming Projects
FLOSS – Congratulations on the 25th year anniversary. How are you and your partners commemorating this milestone?
Carl Brown – Thank you!! We have several things planned. First of all we are spending time thinking back and reminding ourselves of all the great experiences we shared as a company through the years and and being grateful for everything that we have been able to accomplish.
We also have launched several new ventures to kick off the next 25 years such as….
-New FUBU sportswear line now available online and in several retail stores such as Urban Outfitters.
– We recently celebrated the grand opening of our FUBU Mobile stores in New York City. We currently have five locations in Brooklyn and several more coming throughout the East Coast before the holiday season.
– We launched the FUBU radio internet platform
– We will have our first HotelFUBU grand opening early 2018.
FLOSS – How do you think the business of fashion has changed since the 90’s
Carl Brown – I think the biggest change to fashion has taken place at the retail level and the way consumers shop. Everyone is online and if you don’t have a way to sell your products online you are not where your consumers are.
FLOSS – What advice would you give someone that wants to start their own clothing line today?
Carl Brown – My best advice would be to find your lane. Identify your consumer, stay engaged, and give them what they want.
FLOSS – Tell us more about FUBU Mobile and the venturing into the cellular phone business?
Carl Brown – Technology is the future at every level of business and we plan to move aggressively in technology, communication, and entertainment. The FUBU Mobile Stores are a way to get our devices into the hands of our consumers and create a way to provide a service for all of their needs. In addition to that, we see this as a way to give African Americans an opportunity to get into the cellular phone business. We have created a way to own your own retail store with a relatively low investment and we also see this as a way to employ more of our own and allow them to establish a career in this industry.
FLOSS – Knowing what you know now, is there anything you would have done different than when you was younger?
Carl Brown – There are always things you would do differently in hind sight, but overall I think the most imortant thing would have been to invest more aggressively in technology and in commercial real estate. In my opinion, these are two critical industries where we lag behind but can create the greatest generational wealth.
