Floss Weekend Recipe Special: How to make Moussaka a Greek dish at home

One of the most beloved cuisines in the world, Greek food offers a delightful blend of fresh ingredients, vibrant flavors, and Mediterranean flair. One iconic Greek dish that you can easily prepare at home is Moussaka. This traditional recipe combines layers of eggplant, ground meat, and creamy béchamel sauce, resulting in a hearty and comforting dish. Here’s a step-by-step guide to creating your own delicious Moussaka:

Ingredients:

  • 2 large eggplants
  • 1 pound ground beef or lamb
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 can (14 ounces) diced tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 tablespoons olive oil, divided
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 eggs, beaten

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Slice the eggplants lengthwise into 1/4-inch thick slices. Brush each slice with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Place them on a baking sheet and roast in the oven for about 20 minutes until tender. Set aside.
  2. In a large skillet, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, sautéing until they turn translucent. Add the ground meat and cook until browned. Drain any excess fat.
  3. Stir in the diced tomatoes, tomato paste, dried oregano, cinnamon, salt, and pepper. Simmer the mixture for about 15-20 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together. Remove from heat.
  4. In a separate saucepan, melt the butter over low heat. Stir in the flour until well combined, creating a roux. Gradually whisk in the milk, ensuring there are no lumps. Cook the sauce over medium heat, stirring continuously until it thickens. Remove from heat and let it cool for a few minutes.
  5. Beat the eggs in a small bowl. Slowly pour the beaten eggs into the sauce, whisking vigorously to incorporate.
  6. Grease a baking dish with olive oil. Arrange a layer of roasted eggplant slices on the bottom of the dish. Add a layer of the meat sauce on top of the eggplant. Repeat the layers, finishing with a layer of eggplant.
  7. Pour the béchamel sauce over the top layer of eggplant, spreading it evenly. Sprinkle the grated Parmesan cheese on top.
  8. Bake the Moussaka in the preheated oven for about 40-45 minutes, until the top is golden brown and bubbling.
  9. Remove the dish from the oven and allow it to cool for a few minutes before serving. This will help set the layers for easier slicing.

Moussaka is traditionally served warm as a main dish, accompanied by a Greek salad and some crusty bread. Enjoy the rich flavors and indulge in this classic Greek comfort food!
